I haven't seen the new movie yet, but from what I heard it's quite action oriented. My idea was to take a step back and combine something that Star Trek is truly about.
Exploration of the unknown - hence the title. What better way than to combine a beautiful world with a great ship design?
U.S.S. Kelvin in orbit above a planet.
--- Background: Thank you NASA.
Mesh: U.S.S. Kelvin by Tobias Richter, geometry conversion to LW by Matt Christou. Geomety revisions & texture application by Andy Marrs.
Composition: Background composed in PS. Starfield added to original image. Lighting setup and render in LW. Post work (light effects addition/adaption) plus a few overall blending changes in PS.
Total time approx. 15 hours including 12 hours render time due to several test renders for the lighting. 26 layers in PS total.
Really good work. Like the planet especially. Ive not started playing with the Kelvin yet, but great job on the textures and overall feel. I personally like a sparser starfield as more realistic but this works really well. Keep it up!
With "sparser starfield" I take it you mean the more TOS like look? I've never been too fond of that as it always looks a litte fake, but I guess that is as with so many things a matter of taste.

Thank you. I haven't seen the movie yet and I'm going to wait until it's out on DVD. I'm not willing to pay for a cinema ticket if I can get the DVD for the same price, plus, I always get the moron-brigade around me in the cinema. People that eat five star snack meals, mobile phone users, people that comment on every aspect of the movie as if they were the director themselves, parents who drag their undisciplined kids into the movie who'd much rather see anything but the movie they're forced to watch... argh. So... patience has to be my virtue!
