This is yet another amazing work from the great renderer, overseer. I am aware of this word being overused, but I can say without any hestitation that it is an epic work. The scene has a lot of elements in it but actually it is not distracting. The explosion in the center of the picture breaks away from the rest of the picture and helps the viewer to realise that there is something serious going on with all the ships and energy bolts flying around. What I love the most about the composition is the simplicity of the colors and shapes. With only one light source and a few basic elements, it makes for a very clear picture. If there is one thing I do not quite like about the render is the contrast which tends to bring it all down to darker colors. My main issue is that the dark areas on the ships are completely black and the most bright elements, the engines and explosion, aren't quite as bright as I would like them to be. However, even with that small nitpick, the whole picture is glorious and looks really amazing.

Hehe, thanks. Yes, books are usually better compared to the cinematographic version. Still not a bad job and ground breaking on digital effects back in 96/97.

Oh yeah.

The one of major differences are marines. Aren't they had something like armor, like marines from Starcraft had? I wouldn't be suprised, if it was an inspiration - like book titled Berserk and Mass Effect, theme with self-replicating machines, whose goal is kill everything what lives.

Well, there are bound to be differences. Plus the novel was written over 40 years ago now, so back then whatever was conceived to be possible today, was not always accurate or even conceivable, especially since things have developed so rapidly over the last fifteen years or so alone.

The movie worked well the way it was done on it's own, and so does the book. As long as movie state that they're based upon something then there is enough space for 'creativity' by the director. Paul Verhoeven isn't a nobody after all either. ;)

And we should remember it was a satire about Vietnam War. So I doubt that USA would ever release something damning own nation, isn't it?

Well, soldiers only do their jobs. Wars are political desicisons. Soliders only do what they're told. They lose their lives due to the choices of their superiors. There have been and are war critical movies out there. Think of Full Metal Jacket or Jarhead.

I'm just terrified how this one would appear to Afghanistan right now.

The problem is, if USSR/Russia couldn't do much there, no one would do it in fact.

People should keep fiction and reality well apart from one another. And in reality everyone is nothing but temporary enemies or temporary allies. This bickering about resources (and that's what it is) cannot be sustained forever.

Can't say I cared for the movie in general, but it certainly had some unique ideas, and this scene was among the best of them. Fantastic job!

Well, it certainly is a movie to swtich off your brain for a bit and you gotta be in the mood for it (hating the hell out of Denise Richard's smug character), but they did some pretty revolutionary stuff back in the late 90s!

And thank you!
