It's The Enterprise (MMXII) by overseer It's The Enterprise (MMXII) by overseer
This is a current 2012 update! I felt this piece needed an overhaul, since I've learned quite a bit in the last year or two.

Check below for the original to compare:

The Defiant had been pounded by the Borg Cube. "Report!" bellowed Worf. "Main power is offline, we've lost shields and our weapons are gone..." reported the ensign manning the helm. Unwilling to give up, because perhaps today was a good day to die, Worf ordered, "Prepare for ramming speed!", but before the ensign could input the commands he reported the new reading the sensors were indicating. "Sir, there is another starship coming in. It's the Enterprise!"

Based on a scene from the movie "Star Trek: First Contact".

ORIGINAL COMPOSITION: Scene and lighting setup in LW, final composition in PS. Final modifications such as glows, blurs, phasers and photon torpedos, shields etc. done in PS. Added slight blue-ish tinge and grain for TV effect.

UPDATES AUG 2012: Enterprise resize, wide screen, worked over Nebula and Anarchist classes (more clear), changes photons, added Excelsior refit & phaser blast, added additional explosion, added different image blendings, added Earth, added new starfield. Total ~ 3 hours work (on top of the original 7) with another 160 layers or so on top!

MESHES: </b> Borg Cube by Magma. Sovereign class by Ralph Schoberth, Defiant class by Skye Dodds & M. Christou, Nebula class by Luca Silingardi, Akira class by Ian Bremner, Anarchist class by Casey Sullivan & Exceslior refit + Earth (modified by me) by Fabio Passaro.

STAR TREK , & Paramount Pictures, All Rights Reserved.

ORIGINAL SIZE: ~3000x1500 in, 265 layers.

It's supposed to scream 'First Contact', but I guess Armada (or II) works...

This beautifully composed with a very intense cinematic feel. I love the blur of the spaceships as they whiz by and the effects are simply brilliant . I like the way I feel as I look into this composition. It it as if I were apart of the action within this scene.

Thank you very much. I tried to recreate the dynamic feel and the movement shown in the movie this is based on, but in a still image. I'm glad you think that it works the way it's meant to.

Yup. that's the one i meant. its the one game i loved so much that i maintained it for almost 6 YEARS only to have lost it a few months ago when my new system had problems running such an old game... :( and seeing this piece reminded me of it...

Well, you can give Windows 7 a try; it has a really nice compatibility mode that actually works. Or perhaps VirtualPC so you can run Windows XP inside your current OS.

It was a shame to see the Enterprise-D go, but the design isn't bad at all. So, as a successor, she is the Enterprise-E. ;)

Dynamic composition...some of the best Trek CGI I've seen. Looks almost straight from the TV or movie screen. The blurring, motion, focus, and lighting is just top notch. A job extremely well done!

Thank you very much. I kept rewatching the battle scene to get a feel for the dynamics. There are a few things I'm not overall happy with in this piece (small details that probably only bother me), so I might do a few minor, sneaky updates at some point.

using these cg models is it possible to render a full animation of the sequence? If so ILM be hunting u for a job lol:D

Well, an animation would be possible I guess, but I wouldn't be doing one. I don't have the system for it, nor the interest really. Besides, the post work that went into this one frame wouldn't make an animation possible. I'd still be working on it when I'm old and grey.

But then, why would I want to make an animation of a scene, that has already been animated? All I gotta do is slip my First Contact DVD in the player and a-watching I shall go.

I meant like a full sequence, you could probably show the whole battle, start to finish, a lot of it happens before the Enterprise shows up. Better yet, how about the Battle of Wolf 359, we only ever see glimpses of it , would be good to see one of the Federation's biggest defeats, 39 out of 40 ships lost, or even the dominion war.

Yeah, I think I leave that to the people who enjoy animations. I'm far to detail oriented. During postwork I usually pay attention to the tiniest of glows and that aside, I just simply don't have the system to pull off HD animations. Maybe in future, but... since my backgrounds are all digital paintings and not 3D (for the most part), animations are not an option.

I've used this particular image to illustrate my post-work amount. The second picture shows the render as is and the third shows the image after I applied postwork in Photoshop. Way too much to animate anything: [link]

Yes I saw that. I just wanted to achieve a scene as close to the original as possible.

What do you use to render?

I think you picture is better than the original scene, there more depth and clarity to it that wouldn't be in a movie shot that's on the screen for less than a minute. :)

I use Daz Studio to render images, with postwork done in photoshop. :D)
