Step one: Point a finger at a remote star system in a random galaxy somewhere in our universe; or another... and start painting.

A personal layer record for me on this one. :o

COMPOSITION: Entirely painted in Photoshop.

ORIGINAL SIZE: ~12.5x20 in, 518 layers, 1.76 GB PSD.

Comments and critique welcome as always and by all means, if you feel like it, do buy a print. ;)

Thank you to TreeClimber for helping me picking out little imperfections during WIP. It happens with that many layers! :cuddle:

I've seen some other images of planets and space views, but this is by far one of the best ones I've found. It's clear that you've spent a lot working on this one, seeing all the details, the size and the number of layers.

The first thing that attracts the viewer's attention is the shiny sun. The solar flares are pretty good, with that smooth aspect and the transparencies you used, and the colors and the sunspots are great. One can easily imagine themselves on the planets feeling the heat and watching the flares coming in and out of the star.

Next, you see the planets. The shadowing's amazing; you managed to make them look gaseous, in the case of the ones on the right, and solid, in the case of the ones on the left; and the light effects look great. The rings of the brown planet are just awesome: I like that you drew some parts brighter than others, and the opacity looks well to me.

After that, the starts and nebulas finish impressing the viewer. You made each nebula look different, yet all equally beautiful. The tones of yellow and purple contrast with the dark background, being the ones that catch the eyesight, while the pink ones are less stronger and fuses a bit more with it. The only thing I'd comment about them are the big stars which shine more brightly: they seem to be exactly the same, like if you copied and pasted it, though with a different size. This is a small detail that is unimportant, eitherways; this is an incredible piece.

In general, the effect produced by the lights and the shadows on the objects and their textures make a picture which can't be ignored when you see it on the deviantWATCH. This is so good that it could be a frame from a professional animation or movie. One can see the planets slowly rotating, watch the solar flares and the harmony of the system.

I can't say much more because my lack of vocabulary doesn't allow me, but I think I have summarized the impression it's given me. Amazing job, overseer!

Oh... My... *falls on the floor, unconscious*

*wakes up*

Such a beautiful picture... Seriously, it's... wow, incredible; I love the stars and the light effects. And the planets... (My favourite one is Saturn, with its awesome rings ^^)

 Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it that much! It may not be Saturn, but it could very well be, I guess. :)

It was one of the rare occasions where I started with the sun and everything else just came to be eventually.

Oh,I thought it was Saturn, but yeah, it could be another one!

Wait, "one of the rare occasions"? So you've got more of this art... *goes to overseer's gallery to have a look*

Well, Saturn is the only close example of a ring planet we have, so... gotta have some reference, right? ;)

And yeah, there are a couple more...

Blowing my mind! 518 layers, that's insane!

Yeah, that was interesting (I'm sure my laptop agrees with you)... I suppose there would be a more layer-saving way to achieve the same, but sometimes you gotta go with the flow.

True, a good ol' fashion layer merge can cut the total down somewhat but I find some blending styles can go a little strange after a merge.

Well, I was more referring to achieving certain effects with less layers in the first place. I just like to have to option to go back and have trained myself to always make a copy of a layer again, before I do something entirely new to it. Usually I remove those superfluous layers later on, but it can mean they grow quickly. If I'd count the removed layers during WIP I would have probably ended up with a hundred or two more...

I'm terrible for forgetting to back up layers. It's always nice to have the option to change something later on opposed to having to redo a whole section.

It's one of those things. Having run into the problem of having to redo things faaar too often, because of little issues, it's now a matter of habbit.

Difficult to say actually. I would say anywhere between ten and twelve hours (on and off). Plus some fine tuning after, refining etc. Additionally hard to tell, because I pretty mich limited out my system with this one. So +/- in terms of the time stated...

And thank you very much.

Thank you. And yes, PS is definitely a great piece of software. I maintain that in terms of digital imagery of any kind, there is nothing you cannot do with it; a little patience has to be along, too.
