Based on the 4th season STNG episode "In Theory".

Captain Picard flies ahead in a shuttle pod to guide the Enterprise out of a dark matter nebula to allow enough time for necessary course corrections.

Good episode that - again that rare moment showing Picard's right to command, with his skill. Even so, he was greatly overwhelmed.
